How to measure for curtains and roman blinds

Curtains

Measuring curtains without a pole or track currently installed

The drop (top of window to top of sill)

The drop from ceiling to top of window

The amount of space to the side of the window to the nearest wall, if less than 1 metre

When fitting a new pole or track ideally this should be 15cm above the window. For the perfect width, add 30% to the total width of the window to get the ideal length of pole/track (this is your finished width)

Measuring for curtains with pole already installed

Measure the width of the pole (inside finial to inside finial)

Width of curtain pole…………….cm

To measure the finished drop you must first decide on the heading you want:

Headings (please tick)

Pencil Pleat……

Double pleat/Pinch pleat……

Triple Pleat……

Single pleat…..

Then measure from the eye on the curtain ring to your finished length to determine your finished drop (see choices below)

Measure the width of the track. If you have a track that overlaps you need to measure both sides of the track and add them together.

Finished length options

Sill length - Measure 1 cm above the sill

Below sill – Measure 15-20cm below the sill or 2cm above a radiator

Floor length – Measure 1cm above the floor or just touching

Kicked – Measure 2/3cm on the floor

Puddled – Measure 15-30cm on the floor (take three measurements as floors or sills are not always level and take the shortest measurement.

Roman Blinds

Measuring the window for a roman blind - Inside Recess

The drop of the window*……………………………cm

The width of the window*……………………………cm

*Do this in several places (top, middle and bottom vertically and horizontally) and use the smallest measurement

Would you like standard folds or cascaded folds?

Which side would you like the hand chain to be attached? Left or right?

Measuring the window for a roman blind - Outside Recess

The width of the window………………………………cm

The drop of the window………………………………cm

We would recommend for a blind to sit about 20-30cm above the window as this will allow for most of the blind to be pulled up away from the window, thus maximising the light.

And about 5cm each side (ideally wider than the sill) and at the bottom.
